Follow on crops
« on: June 25, 2012, 11:35 »
This growing season has not been my best and my onions are the worst I have every grown (every know diseases and issues you can get they have had!) As a result I have lifted them all and now have a large space to fill.  Can anyone suggest what to put there?  I was thinking of putting my sprout, Kale and Purple sprouting there, but read somewhere that you shouldn't follow onions with Brassicas. Any help will as usual be appreciated.

Regards

Ian

As mentioned somewhere here recently, Ian, we're trying a late crop of broad beans - 'The Sutton' to be exact.

It's still a bit near the end of the planting cycle, but you still may get a crop by September!

They're in paper pots to give them a head start, and they'll go in after the first earlies have been dug!

Best of luck!

Some beans?  Lettuce leaves?

Sorry about your onions.  Our garlic has rust, so all coming up this week, too.  :(

Beans don't grow well near onions because of chemicals given off by onion roots - I'd be concerned that there hasn't been enough time for the ground to clear of those chemicals if the onions have only just come out and you plan to grow dwarf beans immediately.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I'm following my harvested garlic bed with dwarf beans, mange toute, lettuce and a few spring cabbage.

How about American Land cress,  Perpetual spinach, various salad leaves and lettuce.  Even a crop of pak choi just might be possible. ::)

Cheers,     Tony..
