Oh no! Broken trusses
« on: August 03, 2013, 21:59 »
Yesterday's storm has caused trusses to break off a couple of my tomato plants.  They are still attached, but the 'branch' is split almost completely from the main plant.  They looked good too - not yet big enough and still green.  Should I cut them off and chuck them, or leave them to take their chance?

If they are still a bit attached you can wind sellotape round and round the main stem and truss stem to keep the pieces together and stiffen them up a bit. Make sure you then put in some canes and tie them up in the right place, so there is no pressure/weight on the join. If you're lucky they carry on growing, at least long enough for the truss to ripen.

I recently saved a truss on my Purple Ukraine, the toms were too heavy and were splitting the truss away - but the sellotape and tying up has saved them

I've already propped and tied them firmly to canes (if only I had done this properly in the first place!), so I'll get the cellotape out in the morning and see how it goes.  Many thanks.

I always tie all my trusses to the main stem with old tights to stop the weight of the trusses  splitting the truss from the stem.

Hang the truss in a hairnet and suspend from higher up on the stick!  Easy peasy.

Cheers,   Tony.
