Curly kale help
« on: June 06, 2009, 20:14 »
Hi all
growing kale which is now doing well, since we put in the fence to divert Mr badgers attention, I read in the book that you can harvest young leaves, can I be thick and ask how much, do we just ut them off, do we work bottom up so to speak ?

Thanks for any help, it looks so yummy and roast in on the menu for tomorrow

I am sure that you can harvest Kale at anytime, the youngest leaves being the most tender.........BUT.....  generally speaking, I believe that Kale is more an out-of-season vegetable, I ate Kale most of the winter and gave the last of it to my chickens that they ADORED!!!   This year I am growing extra Kale so that my chooks can have a good supply!

I only sowed my kale around 3-4 weeks ago and will be ready to plant out in a weeks time.
When I plant them out they will be 4-5 inches tall and will plant them 18 inches apart.

My kale has been in for ages already, it was a case of it was too big for the modules it was in, so in the ground it went, after being knocked about by the badger it has recovered and gone mad, may inch a few leaves

I sowed mine about 6 weeks ago and it is growing like wild fire. I am eating the thinnings and some going to the ducks as treats. Hopefully keep me going through the year.
Be like a duck. Calm on the surface but always paddling like the dickens underneath.

On my kale packet it said young leaves could be eaten in a salad, has anyone tried this as I have four spare black kale plants that I might use for salad leaves only rather than compost them.  ;)
