Title: new plot - advice please
Post by: peas and carrots on February 10, 2010, 19:35
i have just finished digging a brand new plot in my garden. it's taken all winter due to very thick meadow grass, couch i think, and have tested the soil which reads PH neutral its loam soil so it seems thats very good. I have plenty of well rotted horse manure to put on but i'm aware i shouldn't manure the plot for brassicas and carrots.
My questions are
 1) should i just lime the soil for the brassicas and hope that theres enough humus for them?
2) i want to plant carrots and onions together to keep the carrot and onion flies at bay but don't onions need lots of manure before planting, so should i just manure the rows for onions and leave the rows for carrots?
:blink:A lot of information i know but would really like some advice please it's been driving me crazy to know what to do. Many Thanks and i love your site its brilliant!!

Good evening and welcome to the site. :D First, just lime for the brassicas. Second, don`t plant the carrots and onions together, onions are gross feeders and need the manure. Carrots need the ground to be treated with either bonemeal of superphosphate. :D To prevent carrot fly, surround them with a fleece " fence ".

Thanks David. It makes sense when you ask others but seems so daunting when you have to make the decisions yourself.  ::)

Happy growing, it's going to be a good year i can feel it!
