Using wood which has had woodworm
« on: July 11, 2010, 22:59 »
Hi i'm making my own chicken house and run for my hen when I get them this week, I am using the wood which was taken from my old roof. it has lots of wood-worm holes but don't think it's active anymore, does anybody know what is the best way to treat the wood and for not rotting and of course safe for my hens when they arrive. Many thanks Stuart

Personally I wouldn't use any unsound wood for a chicken coop.  However if needs must, you would need to treat piece of wood with a sealant, as the wood worm holes would make great hiding places for red mite.

Thank you for the replys, what if I use a red mite power and rub it into the woodworm holes and then seal the wood to stop it from rotting, and do you know what I could use as a filler for the woodworm? Stuart
