« on: September 06, 2009, 21:04 »
Have a huge clump of crocosmia, and would like to divide it up and stick some in a new border, my question is, is now too early??? It has still a few flowers on it. Appreciate any help! :D

As far as I am aware, wait until the flowers have gone then divide it up.

May take a while as they spread like wildfire.  They are only bulbs though !!!!  I will check with the expert

I've found you can't kill it & doesn't give two hoots when it's moved.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Foxy, you will have no problem dividing it now. They are virtually bomb proof.  :D

Foxy, when you dig them up, you'll find the corms are stacked up like a pile of plates. The best ones to replant are the ones on top. Make sure you plant them fairly deep, otherwise I find they tend to get blown over.

I have the variety Lucifer and the little beasts are popping up through my asphalt driveway  Personally, I just hack up a clump whenever someone wants any and they just drop it into their own spots. They have to be the only Foxy-proof plant going.

I really like Crocosmia (especially Lucifer) but I was reading the other day that it's actually becoming a real pest in the wild as it escapes from gardens & colonises everywhere.  I know it's all over the hedgerows here which makes me wonder is Fucshia also a pest?  That's all over the place too (I saw tons of it in Ireland a few years ago) & as it's not native it may only have limited value to wildlife.  It's a shame as both these plants are so pretyy, but yes, you'd have to try quite hard to kill crocosmia, although I find letting the dog pee all over it seems to do the trick  ;)

I second that - got oodles of it in my garden, it has taken much abuse over the years and still refuses to go away! :D
