crocosmia ?
« on: June 24, 2019, 19:41 »
I have spent a lot of today digging out bulbs from this plant which has invaded from next door.  I have two large buckets full of them.    I have an idea of planting some of  them in a tub to contain them, as I really do not want another day of digging in the future.
Do you think this will work ?  regards  Mrs Bouquet

they should not spread out of the tub.
they will probably keep spreading from next door though, they are very resilient!

If they are a bulb, how do they spread ?  The neighbours have done their side with some killer that his son gets because he works at the golf course.   They have had it all covered in matting for the last year.   Perhaps that is why they are trying to get to me  :D  Mrs B

the bulb seems to grow on top of each other.
if next door have sprayed and covered the ground hopefully problem solved.
they should be very weakened if any do appear your side.

Yes they were growing one under the other.   I thought it was a malfunction  :D   So all I need now are planting them in a tub instructions please, ie:   depth, when and potting compost ?  regards,  Mrs Bouquet

if you have just risen them I would pot on quickly in any compost you have.
I don't know about what the proper depth should be 2.5 times they size?

Crocosmia grow from round corms, which are like bulbs, and reproduce by offsets - to me, they look like smaller corms on a thin thread from the bigger one.

Plant them 3-5" deep:

Useful article here (even if it is from the Saga website - I searched for it, I wasn't reading the website anyway!!  ) https://www.saga.co.uk/magazine/home-garden/gardening/plants/perennials/best-crocosmia-varieties-to-grow-in-uk

I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Thanks Yorkie for that Saga link, I have just read it twice and written down the ones that I fancy with their details etc.
Thanks to you all for your replies, they have all been so helpful.  I shall try and trace the ones I want, and pot them up.    Cheers,   Mrs Bouquet

All you really need to do with these, is to take the bulbs, yell 'Take that you blasted garden', wander around, chucking them in all directions, then go inside, have a tincture and wait for a year...

We have eighty-seven million of them growing here, and I pull them, dig them, strim them, laugh at them like the odd few that grow where I want them, and fill several buckets of corms every year for the green bin!

I've seen several with a layer of corms getting to five or six deep..:0(

Oh Growster. you do make me laugh.  The ones I have just dug sound like yours !!  But they are not getting away from me again, they are going into a large tub.   Maybe "Nuclear Red" and "Honey Angels".   Red and yellow.   But I like the ones where the flowers are on top of the stems and not drooping over.   I shall think of you when I am planting, and have a chuckle.  :D  Mrs Bouquet
