Goosey's curio quiz.
« on: December 30, 2018, 14:34 »
Just thought you might like to browse over some things that Mr G got me for Christmas. I don't quite know what 1 and 2 are but I do know what 3 is.

I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

Is 2 some sort of sugar spoon? They are usually pretty ornate.

I think 1 might be some form of cork screw or bottle opener.

1)  A thing for getting stones out of the frog of a horse's hoof

2) a sugar spoon

3) a leprechauns' shovel

What original Christmas gifts!!   All you need to do now is find a sweet-toothed leprechaun traveling on horseback, who needs to bury his pot of gold

1)   A pocket corkscrew.   Probably started life with a sheath , and usually American.

2)    A Scottish Marmalade Spoon.

3)    For Pickle and Relish   (or even Caviar !)

Perhaps I should have put a ruler against them so you can see what size they are because they are quite small items especially pics 1 and 2. Pic 1 looks like something a lady would use to maybe undo her bootlaces? Pic 2 is definitely Scottish with that thistle top but there is a bend in the middle where it twists - maybe a love spoon? No-one's got pic 3 as of yet.

What beautiful items!

1) Almost certainly a corkscrew, although just possibly a sewing tool for getting through tough embroidery hems. Could also be used for extracting bone marrow?

2) Jam/marmalade spoon?

3) 'Shovel' spoon. Used for salt and/or sugar

We forget that corkscrews were used on corks of many sizes not just wine bottles. :)

Google perfume bottle corkscrew .

If number 2 is tiny it's more likely to be amustard spoon or a salt spoon rather than a sugar spoon.

Couldn't sleep last night, so got out all my antique reference books.  (Daughter and I used to sell at Antique Fairs)

1)    A corkscrew for opening perfume bottles  (I didn't appreciate the size)
2)     A spoon for feeding baby, hence bent handle for shovelling it in !!
3)     Caddy Spoon
