Is it worth it ?
« on: June 29, 2012, 21:25 »
In the garden centre where I work there was a nasty smell coming from one of the old storage sheds  further investigation revealed four large boxes of asst bulbs from lilies to onions in various states of decomposition . The manager suggested the skip so I have rescued some of them that show signs of life or are still solid many are begonia corms or daliah that have a small shoot Is it worth the effort and compost to pot them up. even if its just to bulk them up to keep till next year
This is the first age that has ever paid much attention to the future which is ironic since we may not have one !(Arthur c Clarke)

If the bulbs/tubers/corms are still in good condition - then go for it.
Lucky you  ;)

I don't see why not, if there are definite signs of life and no real signs of rot.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I've even planted some with a bit of rot and they've still grown into fine plants, so yes, go for it.

Our local garden centre used to give unsold bulbs to community groups rather than put them in the compost.  Our In Bloom group planted loads of daffs and crocus in grass verges etc and put some bright red tulips round a town centre memorial. They were fine  :)

Snap Compostqueen. Our local GC gave us thousands of bulbs last year - they made for very colourful tubs and beds in the village this year.
