hmm, not noticed it in the 12 years i have lived here which leads me to think it must have been in some bought in compost!

a couple of spikes which pulled straight out, there werent much roots to speak of.
im not sure it is tho, after much searching and comparing my wife thinks it is black bindweed.

That would be good news if it isn't japanese knotweed, but if you establish that it is, you should notify your council and they should act.

It looks more like knotweed than bindweed to me in the leaves, red flecked stem and the roots. :(

When we had it our local council didn't want to know! They said contact the professionals, but the professionals only wanted to know if it was on a big scale, not my little bit in the garden. :(

can't see the leaves properly but looks like it. the finer roots near the base are the ones you need to fear as they can potentially grow into new shoots. i've had this in my garden and i had to carefully dig with a spoon and remove it root by root, burn them until i got to the knot itself. below that i split the thick root poured original creosote. i wouldn't recommend using this but its the only thing that killed it. i haven't seen it for 4 years until one popped through from next door's garden. you could use that small concentrate roundup bottle and brush all the leaves with it and some at the base of the finer roots.

If its in your garden at home i'd be more worried about it damaging your property :( Some houses built near us had massive problems after builders failed to deal with J/weed when clearing the site. It sprouted through slight cracks in concrete foundations. I'd notify your council and get them to deal with it. I had some on a small plot I had a couple of years back and we dug quite a very deep and wide hole to carefully get every last bit out but I believe the roots can grow horizontally for yards and yards then pop when the time is right. It will grow back from the slightest little bit of root left behind.

The best way to get rid of it is to use neat glyphosate, injected into the stems in late summer if possible.
Do not dig it up and dispose of it in your garden waste - that is illegal.

Just to clarify we didnt dispose of it in our waste. Its was left to dry out then burnt. Not had any sign of it since...fingers crossed

It means you have a duty to report its presence. You should do this to your council and they should be interested, sadly from replies here they aren't always so.

To be really sure, send pic to, say, RHS. Notify your council whether they help or not, and get it in writing. Whatever it is, try injecting glyphosate if you've only a bit and see what happens.

It was killed off on our site by injections of neat glyphosate. Just make sure you mark the stems you've done with spray paint or similar, or you'll lose track!

I too have killed knotweed by snapping the stems & filling the hollow stems with systemic weedkiller, took a few goes though.
Injecting the living plant sounds wiser.
