Silver appleyard day 21

Well I still have four eggs. What should I see when candling on day 21.

Do you sometimes find it more difficult to see movement when they get bigger ?

I def. caught two doing the jive last night. Not sure about the other two.
Only a week to go it's very exciting.
I've started Misting the eggs with warm water twice a day.

Any thoughts on what I should do to hopefully end up with ducks this time.

Dont know about the candling The hatchery  told us not to move the eggs after day 18 as too much movement can cause the chicks beak to move out of the air sack and can drown!!!!!! dont know how true this is !!
thinks her guardian angel`s gone on strike !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Cleo

When you candle now it should basically be a black blob with a large air sac, if your lucky you might be able to see a slight movement between the air cell and the chick, ie a foot moving

Here's an idea of how big the air sac should be now.

Hope that's some help :)

Keeping my fingers and everythng else I've got crossed for you. You must be really nervous after the awful luck you have had, I was a gibbering wreck.

Good luck, you're doing every thing I would do.
Keep us up to date :D
Be like a duck. Calm on the surface but always paddling like the dickens underneath.

Day 25  :D

Checks the eggs very gently last night . We have three healthy ducklings
one close to internal pip.
Temperature is good...humidity high, no more turning..

Q.  What is the first thing you would feed them when hatched and how many hours after hatch do they need feeding.

Chick crumb, specifically for waterfowl if you can get it. If you can't make sure it is non-medicated as the anti-coccicodosis stuff is toxic to ducklings. They don't need food or water in the first 24 hours as they still have the remains of the yolk that they absorb in their stomach but I have always made sure they have food and water available from hatching. They sometimes need a bit of encouragement and their bill dipping into the water and feed to give them the idea.
If they are not keen on eating to begin with a bit of hard boiled egg crumbled up.

Smallholders Organic range is Coccicodosis free :)
