fat happy chooks
« on: September 23, 2013, 20:03 »
my girls have all gone to bed tonight with crops full of wigglys and creepy crawleys

we are making an extra veg patch and have had the grass covered for a year with old carpet to kill off all the green

well today was uncover day - girls were waiting in anticipation at the treats beneath

good grief they were not disappointed - it was teaming with the usual worms etc
the wire worm population was teaming - they were devoured first - wood lice a 2nd favourite and ants galore

we had a couple of panic clucks at 3 toads and 1 baby adder

tomorrows eggs should be amazing  :D

Fat hens are not happy hens, and their egg production does go down.

The earth worms etc. will be very high in protein which would not be good if they were feeding on them all the time.  It could be a problem for older birds in particular but as an occasional treat they should be fine.

Do remember to worm them before winter though as they might have picked up worm eggs from slugs, snails and earth worms.   ;)

Fat hens are not happy hens, and their egg production does go down.

That's because they can't get into the nest boxes!  :D
