I have put a good quantity of well rotted horse manure in my raised beds (for cabbages and sprouts).  The last 2 years I put top soil/compost over the top.  However, I believe I can plant straight into the manure.  Does anyone have any views on this?  Many thanks.

If the manure is properly composted down there should be no problems with that... that is not my opinion but from a higher source

i have been using well rotted  horse manure for several years on our raised beds we put the manure on the beds and I till it  with our mantis tiller it makes a good bed for most plantings I don't use the manured beds for parsnip or carrots though

One thing you will need to ensure is that the plants are well firmed in, or you'll have problems with them with wind rock.

Manure can be quite loose in texture, so the firming in can be a little more hit and miss.

that is absolutely rite what Yorkie is saying so I tend to leave the soil manure mix about six inches below the raised bed and I've found wind rock has not been a problem then my raised beds are quite deep

Carrots/ parsnips can be grown in manure ground as long as it is not dug/tilled in😉

as I think I did say I till my ground so I would prefer not to risk my carrot or parsnip sowings but each to there own

My neighbour has his own way.  He puts some compost down where he will plant his cabbage/brussels, so it is just larger than the width of his cabbage collars.  He then plants through it, firms it, and puts a cabbage collar  round the base.  Been doing it for years, and never fails!  Each to their own.

Years ago I had a large supply of pig manure delivered at home and spread it about 6 inches deep over a vegetable plot in my back garden.
 Planted spuds into it and had the best crop ever.
What my neighbours and wife thought is another matter!
