Harvesting Rhubarb
« on: April 28, 2009, 21:40 »
How can you tell rhubarb is ready to harvest? Perhaps I am being impatient but ours looks like the right size and colour to get some on the go. Yum...

Sounds OK to me! I pull ours when the leaves are big and open, pulling the stalks out at the crown so there is no bit left to rot  :D :D

We've been picking ours for a couple of weeks. Can't keep on top of it.

How pink is your rhubarb?

Mine looks just a bit greener than I thought it ought!  ???

Depends on the variety.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

My dad's is quite green but cooks up OK. As DD says, different varieties are more or less red/pink/green.

If you're comparing it to the shop-bought sorts, they're mostly forced in the dark so they don't develop any green anyway.

Mine comes up all shades (but I bought lots of unmarked crowns from a garden centre late in the year). It all tastes yummy tho.  Enjoy!
