Are there any seeds that I can grow now in pots
« on: April 23, 2007, 13:43 »
We have acquired an allotment, but the fact that it is basically just turf it will take quite alot to dig it over to get it ready for planting.  So I was wondering if there are any seeds that I can start of growing in pots inside (as we live in a flat) until the ground is ready to plant things out in it.

Yes lots of things including peas, beans, sweetcorn, courgettes...and many more.

I guess really it depends on your space indoors and the time scale you think you have.
I am in a similar situation, anticpating having some space for growing by the end of May early June. (I am spraying and rotovating)
So I have started in pots peas, beans,  brocoli, sprouts, leeks, and lettuce I intended to do some sweetcorn, beetroot, calibrese and tomatos but haven't got round to it yet. Not sure I have space either you see, as they all need thinning out again from the individual pots I sowed them in. you could sow more thinly than I did (I was a bit sprinkly!!) in litter trays and not need to pot on so fast. also I guess if you are sowing now you could have a bed ready soon ish (Are you spraying or double digging???)

Good luck.

Also, if its going to be a while til you get enough of your plot cleared, how about trying to get some big pots, covering some of the plot with weed control fabric and growing some things in big pots on top of the weed control?

Sometimes our biggest garden centre puts all the once used pots into a big bin with a notice saying help yourself, or try freecycle?

We are quite new to our plot too and don't have all of the beds ready yet so I have quite a few seedlings here in the house.

I have tomatoes, tagetes, leeks, loads of brassicas and various beans. They are in the way actually   and I can't wait to plant em all out.

i have chillies, peppers, toms, beans, cucumbers, melons, celery, and many greens all in pots. plus lots of herbs.

some lettuces will transplant - but many don't like being transplanted.

my neighbours must think i'm crackers - because i only have one large window suitable for seeds - so i have put three sets of bookshelves on the window sill, to maximise the space - it's full of veg plants.

i don't have a greenhouse so i have set up a tunnel of glass barn cloches topped with double glazed panels and covered in fleece at night. that houses my toms as they are too big for my window now - it works really well - my toms have never looked so good.

Haven't found this to be the case myself - can you remember varieties and details?

WG, do you mean you haven't found that you can transplant any lettuces or that they all seem to transplant ok for you?
