Moving an apple tree
« on: December 18, 2010, 23:04 »
I planted an apple tree about 4 years ago and looking back i planted it in the wrong place(shallow soil with a bit of shade from a big ash tree) and didn't spend as much money and time on the planting hole as I should have done(In a bit of a hurry and in a 'o nature will look after itself mood ).
With the understandable result that its produced about 6 fruits since being planted and from the lack of growth clearly dislikes the position.
Is it posible to move it as I dont think it has made much root growth or would I be better off buying a new tree and treating this one with a bit more love.(the lack of fruit doesn't have anything to do with lack of pollination as my neighbour has loads of apple trees that flower at the same time as mine

Transplanting a tree is always a bit hit or miss.  If you want to try then early spring would be the best time.  Take as large a rootball as possible and prune the tree quite hard.  Water and feed very well all through the summer.  Remove any fruit it tries to produce in its first transplant year.

Or buy a new maiden tree ;)

PS. Check which variety it is and ensure it has a polinator variety if it needs one.
