Coriander rules ok
« on: December 15, 2010, 21:58 »
I tried planting coriander seed in a big tub in late August because someone said (think it was Alys) that it prefers cooler temperatures and my Summer stuff just bolts.
It came up good and stocky and grew to about 6" before the icy weather started and since then has been covered with snow, thawed. frozen again....but is still going strong and giving me leaves!!!!
My salad tubs are against the house on a south-facing wall and I think that's the secret!
I've got 6 different lettuces; Little Gem, Webbs and Dazzle just hearting, 3 Winter types big enough for leaves, mizuna, pak choi, corriander and lamb's lettuce all still going!!!
Who needs a greenhouse?
Plenty of lovely salad.....shame there are no tomatoes.......

Fresh coriander is wonderful stuff!  I make a pesto with coriander, parsley, parmesan, garlic, nuts & seeds, salt & olive oil.  The proportions change every time.  I just chuck the whole lot in the food processor and whizz it until it's the right texture.

Depending how strong you like the flavour, you can change the ratio of coriander to parsley and depending on how runny you want it (eg for tossing through pasta, or for spreading on crackers) you can change the amount of oil.

The nuts & seeds I use change every time too.  In macadamia season that's what I use, but otherwise any combo of almonds, walnuts, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds... just whatever's in season.

YUM any time of day with toast & a poached egg!

Same here I wouldn't consider trying to start coriander any earlier than April outdoors and I don't think it would do well in the polytunnel, but I could be wrong. ;)

Coriander Soup - Alentejano peasant food at its best.

Poach an egg in salted water, chicken stock, or fish stock. Place poached egg on a slice of toast in a soup bowl. Add loads of chopped coriander (leaves) and garlic to the cooking water, bring back to the boil and pour over the egg with a swirl of olive oil.
