Phostrogen soluble plant food
« on: April 26, 2013, 17:47 »
Just picked up a 1.2kg pack of Phostrogen in Tossco for £3 - that's £1 off and 50% extra in the pack (makes 120 gallons instead of the standard 80.)

Seems like a pretty good deal to me.  :)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

Didn't know they still make it. I have a package still on the shelf and I've not seen them in our shops for years.

I suspect Miracle Grow has taken a lot of the market share, possibly because it's got a far more inspiring name!  ::)

I think MG works fine, but I'm not that keen on the blue dye in it which stains my fingers if I'm not careful (which I'm not!)

I always used to use it, mmm  let's just say many years ago

Strange how things go out of fashion when there's no real reason to stop using them  ;)
I'll have a look to see if it's still on offer next time I'm in there  :)

That is a good deal. Our local garden centre is selling the 80 litre pack for £5.99.

Miracle Grow All-purpose feed is rated at 24-8-16 NPK

Phostrogen is rated at 14-10-27 NPK

In very simple terms that would suggest that MG is better for leafy plants, and Phostrogen for flowering plants.

In the real world where liquid feeds are normally used just to give an occasional boost to flagging plants rather than being the only source of nutrients, it probably doesn't make that much difference, although if you have both it would probably make sense to use MG on plants like leeks and sweetcorn, and Phostrogen on tomatoes and other plants where you don't want to encourage too much leafy growth at the expense of flowers.
