Has anyone tried growing Oca?
« on: January 22, 2015, 18:56 »
I have been eyeing it up for the past couple of years on the real seeds website but I'm not sure as they are quite pricey.

Are they easy to grow?
Do you get a good yield?
And most importantly - are they tasty?

1. Yes they are

2. Yield varies; mine were not that large (but it's hard to dig them all up so you do get more next year!)

3. Nice roasted. I thought they had a lemony slight tang.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Easy to grow and you can eat them raw too, sliced in salad, as well as in stir fry. They are a bit like lemony water chestnut.

Pretty foliage is also edible as an addition to salads  :nowink:

I got some from Auntiemogs and they have been brilliant. I like them raw as well as cooked - the larger ones are more floury when cooked than the titchy ones, though that could be my cooking methods.  :)

Liked mine too. Nice boiled roast and raw. Looking forward to doing more this year.

Hi RJR
I got about a dozen from Auntiemogs post last year and potted them up into 42ltr trugs, that were out in the plot in March and into an unheated gh in October. The yield from 3 tubers was about 3lbs although small in size they were very numerous and for me taste was ok a bit starchy with a lemony aftertaste - (I have only tried them once so may not have cooked them properly).
I have way more than I need so if you want to PM me I can send you some - they are the red variety

Was that a subtle hint Mum?   I've been debating updating the thread for this year, but it depends on how many people would like some.

  I wasn't hinting honest - I didn't know if you still had any!

I meant, I was surprised that someone who had

had completely missed your thread on here  ;)
