Do you?

I'm tempted not to.

I wait until the 'thinnings' are big enough to use as baby carrots. Pull them in the evening to avoid attracting carrot fly.

I did today and placed mint leaves over the remaining ones to remove any odour the carrot root fly that might be around
All the way from my allotment in beautiful Derbyshire. I'm in year 3 of my allotment and wish I'd caught the bug years ago, things growing from strength to strength

I don't.

I try to sow reasonably thinly with my 5 thumbs on each hand. I find they then can gently push each other to one side.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

That;'s what I'm hoping will happen!

I thinned last year but was unconvinced that anything was better as a result.

The baby carrot idea is good too.

Perennial question here!

I keep stairing at mine, and we had a few thnnings on Thursday, with the longest being about 5" and the size of a pencil. The flavour is fantastic, but we actually want a bit more bite...

So I'll probably stare at them for a few more days, then bite the bullet!

I thinned the parsnips a few weeks ago, and they're taking over and whizzing ahead, so I really must decide very soon!

Or not...

Depends how thick they are in the row. I first thin mine out when tiny so that they are single plants. As soon as they get finger size start to pull a few, selecting the most crowded. Eventually I end up with carrots about 2 inches apart.

Actually, I always use the thinnings to make a second row of carrots. I tend to do that with everything that needs thinning. It does set them back a bit but that basically saves me starting off a second lot of seeds. And no, I've never had carrot flies :)

I'm very gentle about taking them out, always dig a finger down next to the clump of carrots and gently lift them from below rather than pulling from above. That way you minimise the root damage. I then use a finger to make a new hole and just drop the seedling into that. They do go a bit droopy, but I give them a good watering right away and that seems to perk them up.

Mrs Growster and I have just decided to thin them properly now. We've had several handfuls of thinnings, which are marvellous, but at this rate, we'll be eating small carrots all the time, and never letting them reach their majority...;0)

Does anyone like planting a late row to go into the autumn?

yep - I sowed a row on Saturday.

The other rows look quite happy so I'm going to leave them this year.
