weeds in potatoes
« on: June 28, 2015, 21:32 »
how does people deal with weeds growing in there potato rows?

last year i mulched all the rows, no weeds but it did encourage a hell of a lot of foliage growth. this year i have not mulched them at all but do have a lot of weeds.

i'm thinking that i will cut the weed stems before they produce seeds but not pull them up as i don't want to disturb the soil and leave some potato's to go green.

thanks for any advice and views.

I gradually hill mine up through the growing season, little and often, maybe about 4 times. That keeps the weeds down.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I leave them.... There are so few as the potatoes shade out most weeds on mine and they just die off. If there a couple that look like they might make it to seeding stage I chop them off.

Twice a week I feed.  Once a week or so - hoe weed seedlings, water, slug pellet then hill up. No idea if this works or not but I usually do ok with my spuds.

Hopefully it'll be ok this year too (jinx!)

As an aside, I have used tomato feed (Wilkos) as I had a huge amount left (and couldnt be bothered dragging any other feed up to the plot on the bus), does anyone else us it for their spuds?

I pull out the most obvious weeds and leave smaller stuff knowing that the potatoes will shade them out eventually.

Snap!  Anything that shows above the potato foliage has to go  ;)

It does depend on how big an area you devote to potatoes though... I have three beds 1.2m by 3.6m, so weeding is manageable

If you have several 25m rows, as some do on our site, I guess weeds just happen
