sweet williams
« on: June 25, 2010, 22:30 »
At Heligan last week they had this big strip of sweet williams.  I've got them in the garden but have never grown them myself, they were here when i came 10years ago.  I  want to grow some for cutting next year so do you sow now like you would wall flowers and then transplant in the autumn or do you think the heligan ones were sown and just thinned, they look pretty close.

thanks

I think Heligan would have transplanted them there,  they would have had something else there, and flowering, into the autumn. They wouldn't want just rows of seedlings on display IMO.
Gorgeous display though 8)

Sweet williams are part of the dianthus family and you can start seeds anytime really. They're very hardy and when they're ready they'll flower and throw out seeds which will self start. I love them and now they're everywhere in my garden. I even have a dark one called Sooty.

They are a gorgeous plant and a great cut flower that lasts for ages even in very warm weather.

There are various different types // heights... Indian Persian Carpet being a shorter variety.  ;)

Yes, I'm just sort of realizing what good value plants they are.  I'm going to buy a packet tomorrow :)
