Sweet peas and Nitrogen
« on: June 27, 2009, 15:34 »
Hello, does anyone know if sweet peas work like edible peas, that is, do they fix nitrogen in the soil?  Are the two plants related, or completely different families?
Thanks

Sweet peas are Lathyrus odoratus and Garden peas are Pisum sativum.  They are both belong to the Legume family and so they both fix nitrogen.

However sweet pea seeds are  poisonous!

Cheers,

Gillie

Thanks for info. I love sweet peas (as well as "green" peas, and will try growing as a "crop" in veg garden. That way the flower garden wont be ransacked each time my better half needs cut sweet peas.  :)
