Hi,

I have 2 Clematis growing in pots outside the back door and they seem fine and have pansies growing around the base for colour.  They have nice trellis also.
My honeysuckle however never did that well in posts and as soon as I put them out in the garden they went mad.

Hope this helps.

Hi rangerkris,

Honeysuckle will often grow in quite poor soil, so it might be worth a try. Clematis like their roots to be out of direct sun. I have one that has grown well for over 20 years and it's roots are under a slab.
Lynne.

So much to do, but so little time.

Try digging in some leafmold before you plant the honeysuckle Kris and it will bring big rewards  :D

I grow both in pots and they both do well, except the ones that get eaten by slugs or peed on by dogs, I do tend to treat some of the summer flowering ones as annual plants.  I feed the clematis with worm tea diluted 10 - 1 & keep their roots shaded

My experience of clematis is that they like their feet cool and slightly damp - a slab on the soil is good, as someone suggested, or other plants that'll keep off the worst of the summer sun.  Pots might be OK so long as they're in the shade (of other pots if necessary), but if you put them in full sun, you will almost certainly cook the roots and lose the plant.

Clematis = cool roots for sure and "head in the sun" for most varieties.

Problem with a pot is keeping it sufficiently moist....  :(

We grew both clematis and honey-suckle at the end of a narrow, low cavity wall filled with soil. Despite shade for the roots neither plant was very robust.... moved both to an open bed and away they went!!

I have just moved my clematis and honeysuckle out of pots as they were getting pot bound and watering was becoming a twice a day job.The honey suckle seemed stressed as well. :(

Some Clematis are more suited to container growing, but your tub should be about 1/2 barrel size. You will need 3 or 4, 1" drainage holes and stand the barrel on tiles, to help drainage and rot. Crocks to help drainage about 2/3 " deep.  John Innes No.3, plus a little peat, or multi purpose.
These are all suitable for your tubs.

Put 2 bamboo supports into pot and a 3/4" pipe fixed to tub side.

Spread out roots, and put them low down into tub and fill tub, (remove any leaves below soil level)Cover with tree bark, or underplant.  Hope this helps, good luck.  Mrs Bouquet

Watch it if it is near a tree cos it'll scramble up as quick as anything -- took hours cutting one out of a lilac tree last year... loads of lilac flowers this year, and the montana is heading upwards again .....
