TRAILING geranium seeds
« on: February 24, 2009, 15:39 »
Does anyone know where to get Trailing geranium seeds,by the packet.

I put them in my wall containers, but have to buy plugs which can be a bit expensive and i promise myself every year that i will raise from seeds myself, but can never find the seed.

Again this year i have bought plugs,so any help for next year please

Most sources I have found far too expensive to bother with ie £3 odd for half a dozen seeds  :tongue2: but have bought other stuff from seeds-by-size which seel them by weight and list loads of ivy leaved trailers.
Might be worth a look. Sorry you'll have to google this as I can't remember the website exactly.

Hope this helps

Haven't you got anywhere to overwinter them. I keep mine frost free and on the dryside all winter, then prune and repot in spring...........just the same as the other geraniums (pelargoniums)

I have found geranium seeds difficult to germinate, first time none germinated, second time 8 out of 20.  Luckily second time was free packet.  they weren't trailing ones though.

Sorry that i have not thanked for replys,to many things cropped up all at once.

The seeds do seem a bit expensive and dont allow fot a failure rate, but i have made a note of Jersey plants, they seem a bit more reasonable

Again thanks

Digger have you tried Wilkinsons plug plants.
Last year they did 2 packs for £5 - I filled lots of pots for £10. Have not checked their prices yet this year as I am always tempted to buy too early!
I agree about the poor germination of the seeds!

I've had 100% germination from a couple of different strains; I'd thought they were very easy seeds, and was about to recommend them as foolproof!  Am I just really lucky, or is this something to do with different varieties?

I agree.......

My 93 year old dad has great success over-wintering ivy-leaf geraniums (pelargoniums) in an unheated lean-to greenhouse. [The greenhouse catches the winter sun and he uses fleece when frost threatens].

He also takes summer cuttings and grows these on. Buying replacements each year would be too expensive. Cost of seed and problems with germination = not viable for the number of plants he grows.

They seem to be as easy if not easier to over winter than standard leaf varieties as they are not so soft stemmed.

Each year we buy him a few new types to add to his collection - often we are given twice the number back the following Spring!
