has anyone done this b4 from a cutting? i`d like a holly tree in the garden and my father has a well established one but in true allotment style i dont want to go to the garden centre and pay for one.
any tips please?

We get self set hollies all over in the garden and they are a bit of a nuisance. Don't know how as we never seem to have any berries that I see) They are easy enough to grow from berries though but they are funny things as the emryo inside is sometimes not fully ready to grow and it needs time to 'ripen'inside so can take quite a while to germinate.

My Dad grew a fancy variegated sort from a hardwood cutting... autumn cutting, took off all but top four leaves and put in a slit trench with sand at the bottom. Rooted nicely by next summer and is a tree now about four foot high (in my garden)
