What's eating my seedlings?
« on: May 08, 2018, 08:38 »
Hi folks  :( As you can see from my face I'm not too happy this morning.
I cleaned the greenhouse & washed it all down will a strong disinfectant
at the start of April left it to air & set my veg seeds in trays & put them
on raised shelves  :). Everything was going great, ( I only have a small veg
plot so I only grow 3 or 4 of each veg ) every thing was up & doing well &
then one night I forgot to put the clear lid back on after watering & next
morn' walked in to find most of them had been chomped :(. Yesterday I moved
my Runner beans in there, which had been growing in the shed window &
were about ready to go in the ground & again this morn' one pot containing two
plants have had the same done to them , thankfully the others are ok :D
The thing that gets me is that whatever is eating them doesn't bother the veg
plants growing elsewhere in the 6x4 greenhouse. WHAT COULD IT BE ??
I look forward to any help you can give for the future  ;).
Keith.

It'll be dragons. There's been reports of dragons in south yorkshire. Apparently they're attracted to the reflections caused by greenhouse glass. You'll need a knight.

Very likely slugs or snails, less likely mice.

You would probably have noticed if you'd got dozens of snails, so if you've only got a couple in there that would explain why not everything's been chomped. Normally there is some evidence of their slimy progress if you look carefully, but I think it's wise to take anti-snail precautions anyway.
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

One of the best things about being an orang-utan is the fact that you don't lose your good looks as you get older

Yes I'd say slugs or snails too. Try beer traps - cheap beer (Asda do four tins of 2% bitter for 90p) half fill a jam jar and place it on the floor. Don't let the rim be flush with the ground as beetles fall in and beetles are good as they eat slug eggs and other pests.

Slugs/snails have a drink, get drunk, fall in and drown.

It's certainly something that likes new shoots (don't mean one of our members!) so put just a few slug pellets on the shelf, or put the trays onto a seed tray with no holes in it, put that into a larger tray and fill that with water.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

Hi again. :nowink:
Many thanks for the replies. In answer to the 1st about dragons & needing
a knight, it's at knight when it happens  :D. As I said in my post it's always
the same side of the g/h  ??? but what I didn't say was that there is no
sign of slug/snail trails, also the g/h is screwed tightly down to a concrete
base & the door has been completely shut at night so can't see how mice
could get in. I'm baffled. I've now set seeds straight into the ground
under glass, if nothing shows there's still time to buy plants but then I have
to buy a lot more than I need as they come in trays 9/12 round here & nobody
around me to share with, sounds tight I know but a shame to throw away
unwanted good healthy plants.
Thanks again for replies  ;)
Keith.
