The only time I saw anything like that was with a hen who was not eating much. Is there enough poo to suggest that she has had a good feed?

yes it was a big pile, will check in the morning if there is another. Layers pellets are available all day, mixed corn in the afternoon and they free range all day so eat lots of bugs, grass, etc.
Staffies are softer than you think.

If this is a one off as can happen it's hardly worth worrying about however if it does reoccur check there's no mouldy feed or grain about.  As others have said it could be caused by a toxin.

Hi Hillfooter, at the moment it was a one off but will check again when I let them out in about 45 mins. No mouldy food around but they do free range so could have eaten something in the field next to me (farmer has sown winter barley and 4 of the girls like to help themselves to this   ). All of them from that shed look healthy enough and are eating their food and drinking enough so I suppose time will tell. If I get any more today then I think I will see my vet about it although I can't take a bird along as I can't figure out who did it - all their fluffy bits are clean without green tinting on any of them.
Really never thought I would be inspecting pooh so closely when I started keeping chickens a couple of years ago let alone writing about it at 6 in the morning

Hi Annie, have replied to you in my pm  :D
