Why are Jamie Olivers hens yolk bright yellow and mine are really quite dull in colour?
Cheers

Could be the feed, yours get plenty of greens ? Ours tend to be a rich orange colour, could be the breed .
-
yeah they get a fair few greens, left them this morning munching on spring greens :)
They are bovans goldline...
-
Think mine may be the same I bought em as RIR x LS
-
hmm odd then.. should I be giving them more grass?
-
No idea Sadgit, I know our yolks are deeper when they have been on the lawn for a day, but long grass don't do them any good can stick in their crop.
-
Our Amberlinks are all the same breed, fed on the same feed and eat the same treats, but their yolks do vary in colour quite a lot from pale and dull to bright yellow and bright orangey, but it doesn't mean there is any thing wrong with them. They have their corn in the afternoon which people say gives them a brighter yellow yolk, and I thought Munty said that giving them greens gives a brighter yelow, but don't quote me on that, Munty will confirm when he comes back on!!!

my 3 goldlines all give nice orange yolks even when they're not let out of the run onto greener pasture - perhaps it's the feed?
Should have some nice tasty eggs tomorrow - they've been cadging all of the grubs and worms in my newly dug bed today! I didn't know they could fit so much in their little crops and bellies!!
-
this is odd, as I feed them the normal (only option for me) layers pellets

THAT`S a strange one :o as layers pellets tend to have a natural ingredient ,that makes the yolk a deep yellow  (thats what it said on my bag of pellets).

I think tomorrow I will take a photo and post it here :D

I was shocked at how bright our own egg yolks were compared too shop ones - made a sponge cake and when i cut into it you almost needed sunglasses for its colour - it looked like i had used food colouring in it

Thats how my nans cakes used to be! Shocking yellow!
-
Yes they certainly change the colour of homemade cakes :D I'm sure they seem more moist too.
-
My eggs used to have irridescent yellow yolks too, however since they've eaten all my lawn the yolks aren't quite so yellow, though much nicer looking than shop bought eggs.
I give them cabbage/kale daily but it seems as it's grass that has the greatest effect on egg colour. So why isn't milk yellow? (laughing smilies)

well had some today and forgot to take picture... but the missus says they are a nice rich bright yellow yolk... well I am colourblind so perhaps I shouldn't have started this topic.. oops sorry
