Just visiting
« on: September 12, 2010, 08:52 »
Hiya,
just popping in as we are chicken sitting for our neighbours 3 chooks - don't ask me what breed, but they look like the chickens most kids draw - largish and orangey brown with red combs, called henny, Penney & Sally - but i have no idea which is which!
Send a prayer up tonight when we have to entice them back in!!

Actually it might be another 3 less of them (chooks) - got confused about the handwritten notes re layer's pellets and ended up giving them a handful of fish food instead as it was in an unlabelled jar - they loved it . Only found out as DS was feeding the fish from the fish food in the bag that it was the same as the unmarked stuff I had given them
Still, they loved it anyway - went down a treat with the mealy worms - DS had to scoop one chook up as she had no intention of being shut in, but they're fairly easy to pick up as carolyn had them from teeny chicks, so they're used to being handled

Day 2

Narrow escape this morning - had been warned to feed the fish after the chooks are shut up for the night - found out why this morning.
All I can say is the net over the fishpond must be super strength as the chooks were hell bent on pecking up the last few flakes of food - much tastier than the mash
had to wait until it was all gone in case one fell through
No eggs yet, lots of poop, think they're a bit stressed that mum & dad have disappeared

3 eggs last night, no fish food left this morning, so they only visited the pond briefly - one got mighty close to the gap though

When we were on holiday last year daughter no. 4 and mother in law looked after the chooks.  One afternoon they found one laying on it's back, legs in the air, wet through covered in pond weed, they reckon she had tipped into the pond while trying to eat the plants  ::) she was ok, just a bit wet

Chickens will risk their necks to a stupid degree for food

Mine regularly end up in the pond  ::)  It's OK at the moment as the plants growing round it are screening the water, but if they can see duckweed, they're in and the frogs splashing around in the spring drive them wild  :D
