Growing Onions in the same place ?
« on: November 13, 2010, 08:43 »
Hi I have taken over a large plot on which the previous plotter didn't fully cultivate all the space and did not use any sort of crop rotation.

He told me that last year his onions were great, the problem I have is that I want to start a crop rotation system on the plot and it would mean growing the Onions in the same place next season as they were this year.

Am I risking trouble by growing Onions in  the same place for two years (and there after in a 3 year crop rotation).

Thanks FB

The main risk is probably white rot and if you get that you have it for a long time. Otherwise you are probably OK.

Below is a quote from the experts at Robinsons Seeds.

Onions can be grown on the same ground for many years; our own onion bed is now 140 years old and has grown onions continuously for this time. However a strict health routine must be followed if you require using the same ground again and again. If any onions are suspect always remove not only the plant but also a small amount of soil from where the onion was growing. Hopefully this will remove any unwanted bacteria in the soil. The ground will also benefit from a watering of Jeyes Fluid after the crop has been harvested; this again will kill any unwanted bacteria or fungi.

Before you use Jeyes in this way, (it is no longer licensed for this use) consider that it also kills all beneficial life in the soil.

Two old codgers on our allotment grow onions on the same plot year after year.  They grow mammoths (their record this year was a 3lb onion).  They water in Jeyes fluid each time.  They only use this method on their onion area, they don't use it on any other part of their plot.  It seems to work :D

Thanks to all for the replies , I will 'risk' it for the next season only and then continue with my 3 year rotation as planned.

Thanks FB

I think that this is your best course - I grew onions in the same place for a number of years and did get white rot and it takes a long time (think about 10 years) before you can grow them again. Good luck for next year - like everything else your own onions cannot be beaten.
