Using Roundup
« on: January 30, 2009, 10:25 »
Our allotment has become a bit overgrown due to my pregnant partner being unwell over the last few months, its not knee high but covered in a layer of what looks like chick weed??,

Anyway the question was, we plan to "roundup" the whole site then rotovate when its all dead, is it too early/cold for roundup or will it still work

Thanks in advance

Davie

Glysophate only really works when the weeds are growing, which fortunately they are not at the moment!

I get a lot of chickweed, but all I do is rake it off & dig in what's left!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Do you know anyone with a few chickens?  Let them loose on the chickweed and it won't be there long!!!!! :)

It will work now but it would probably be best to wait for a slightly milder period. This stuff will grow at the slightest hint of Spring.

Read the label and you will find two basic rules. Only apply it when the leaves are dry. Only apply it when there will be no rain for 6 hours afterwards. Herein lies the difficulty because at this time of year when it is mild it is usually showery.

It will be slow to show symptoms. The first symptoms are pale growing points.

Whether you can see symptoms or not you can dig or rotovate after 7/10 days when the chemical will have penetrated deep into the roots.

You can plant immediatly as glyphosate is rapidly broken down in the soil.

hi . if you use glysophate you can apply it on a frosty morning if you mix in a little washing up liquid, and you should see results in 2-3 weeks ;)

My memories of rotovating chickweed are of every little piece of chopped up root growing into a new plant.

Hi from my experience from my dairy farming days, using round up is best done when the chick weed is just coming back to life as with any weed, and spray on a day you know thats going to be sunny, wait for the mist to go off the weeds then spray them, i would recomend it be left 7 days this way its give the chemical chance to get to the roots .

yes it will work on grasses, the only thing it wont work on is woody stuff like brambles , it is important like i said before to spray on a day you know is going to be no wind and sunny and the grass is growing, as round up is absorbed through the leafs of the plant round up is quite strong so if it is windy its best to wait as you may get drift and you dont want to kill anyone elses plants around you .

Round up or rotovating ??

Both work if done right, most people will say noo don't rotovate it spreads it, correct BUT if you can rotovate every few weeks, it chops it up smaller and smaller weakening each piece thats left. Ideally if you could start clearing say Sept and rotovate right throu to the spring on a regular basis then most would die out. Doon't forget rotovating will also churn up any weed seeds in the ground laying dormant these will germinate and grow so you'll kill those too, the soil will become lighter making it easier to pull out weed roots as you come across them and hoe off any growth too.

It's a similar principle to making a sterile seed bed and thats works  ;)

I'm sure Shaun posted up a piccie of a document covering this idea.
