Buying Paraffin In Pontypool/Cwmbran Area ?
« on: October 21, 2012, 09:04 »
Picked up an aladdin 203 this weekend but am having trouble sourcing fuel. Brian watkins and pugh's garden centre are looking for £8-£10 for 4 litres. I was of the understanding that it averages 85p a litre or is that going back a few years? Any local know where I can get some for a more reasonable cost
thanks in advance

Problem is these days it's mostly pre-packed stuff. It was a lot cheaper when you could get it from your local garage.

B & Q have it for £6.98 for 4 litres.

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

That's what I was hoping for, a local garage but none seem to carry it any more. I was goning to try b&q but didn't think they'd carry it, thanks for that I may take a trip to town if nothing else comes up cheers

Best check on line for availability first before wasting petrol! I note the one at Cwmbran is a mini B & Q.

You can reserve and collect if they stock it.

As a youngster in the 60's I can remember my Mum sending me each week to our local Hardware store to buy Paraffin for the only heater we had to heat the whole of the house (apart from the front room where we had a Coal fire). At the time many families used Paraffin heaters because not many had Central Heating so most places sold Paraffin.

The Paraffin heater started the evening in the Hall and closer to bedtime Dad would move it upstairs to try and get some warmth into the bedrooms. If Mum was feeling rich she would tell me to get Esso Blue but if money was short then I had to get the cheapest available.

At the time I hated the smell of the Paraffin and lack of warmth the heater gave out but now Dad has passed away and Mum is frail, I would love to go back to those times.

We had one of those heaters too. Used to come out when the power cuts were on in the 70's. Good times  :)

Not sure about an allotment association around here but the heater I have used 4 litres in 3 nights(2 inch burner) so I've used up some armoured cable from my old works that came back from site to run power to the greenhouse and picked up a small 60w heater to see how that works out for heat as it works out about 1p for nearly 2 hours which is not too bad
