spent compost
« on: October 07, 2012, 00:24 »
What can I use the compost I had my pot grown in tomatoes for?
Can I use it for carrots in pots or just add it to my plot, and which type of crop would it be best for.

thanks

A lot of people simply add their spent compost to their plots, but do add it to an area that you know you won't plant tomatoes or potatoes next year so that any diseases like blight won't be passed on. And yes, you could add it to a pot for carrots along with some sand.

Most spent compost will be lacking some nutrients either used by the plants or leached out through rain/watering so I personally would not advise trying to re-use it for another crop.  However, the fibre content are perfect for digging into plot beds and improving soil structure.  Treat that bed as would in any crop rotation and avoid growing tomatoes, potatoes or chilli/peppers - growing carrots would be fine, but any other crop would benefit too.

You can add some general fertiliser and then grow salads in them over winter before finally adding the contents to your your beds.

I don' know why, but I've always added it to my compost bin. ???

Never thought about reusing it straight away, so may try that as my new half plot needs a lot of soil and nutrients!

Last year I just cut off the top of the tomato plant and stuck in some parsley seedlings which I happened to have and had parsley all winter from the greenhouse.  It was a pity to chuck it out in the spring when I needed the big pots again.

Old compost, cat litter tray, one radish seed every inch, the job's a good 'un!

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I mix mine with some fresh compost & add some chicken manure pellets or blood fish & bone & fill the hanging baskets that i plant the runners from the strawberries in that go in the greenhouse in jan/Feb

I generally just lob it on the beds for the works to take down.

I will either throw it on the veg bed simply to create a reasonable soiul and also it is somewhere to throw it.

Some gets raked on to the general soil, again to improve the structure of that.

I have also put it in a large tub, mixed a bag or half bag of manure with it, about 50/50, then grown potatoes in it.

It is really just a medium for planting things in as the nutrients are added at the factory, the compost itself just being something for the plants to stand up in. Hydroculture is pretty close to modern compost that we buy.

But before you water in a can of general fertiliser they have more accurate stuff at the producers, however a watering can of general fertiliser may just work if stuck.
