down the side of my house its very dry. just cleared a lot of dead  wood from the bushes (not a clue what they are). which cover plants are good for this type of ground

Pachysandra is a good ground cover for that situation. You will need to water it until it establishes, but after that it is pretty bomb proof.

Any of the sedums would also de well there, plus creeping Phlox (Phlox subulata)
