I also bought GG from Wilkos and planted them on Sunday. I still have the packet which shows autumn planting.

Have Wilkos tricked us?

If you Google "when to plant Golden Gourmet shallots"

the RHS comes up top of the list and says plant Nov-March, several sites below that suggest spring planting

Then there is the old adage that shallots are planted on the shortest day and harvested on the longest.

You pays your money and takes your chance on who is right or wrong, I suppose  :nowink:

Probably vulnerable to wet winters, but otherwise fine.

How about covering them with a polythene cloche, to be on the safe side?

Best wishes

GG's have always been my "banker" shallot whilst I experiment with other more "exotic" varieties.

I plant out saved bulbs towards the end of Feb (conditions permitting) and this year they stood up to the March snow far better than the Mikor which I had a few failures with (one plant even survived being dug up about 8 times by fox cubs! )

They crop well here, usually being ready mid to late July - whether you would get an earlier and/or better crop planting sooner I don't know as I've not felt the need to try that.

Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!
