Strings
« on: October 12, 2013, 09:12 »
I want to use the grow your toms/tall plants up a string method.  Winding the plant round the string as it grows.

I have only the hoops of the PT to attach to though.  Is there a good way of hanging the strings which will work with a hoop only PT?

TIA

Fix galvanised wire from one hoop to the next along the tunnel, twisting the wire round the hoops as you go.
(careful you don't puncture it mind  ;)

Then you can tie the strings to this.

Checking fleabay it seems there's lots of different thicknesses of galv wire.

Tempted to go for nice and chunky 3mm but would thinner do?

TIA

Apart from plastic coated wire (which is usually a bit too thin for your purposes) garden centres usually have two thicknesses of galvanised wire - if that's the case where you are I'd go for the thinner one as it's easier to work with and plenty strong enough (but I don't know the actual gauge either!  ::) )
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

you could run a length 1 inch by 1/2 inch wood battern along the length that your planting climbing plants, then screw closed up hooks or circles that have a screw thread into the batten. then run your strings up through the loops/ closed up hooks.

personally i don't like the idea of poking galv wire past the polythene, and the polythene resting on it. i think it i would prob tear it while doing it and the polythene resting on the galv wire may promote hot spots.

if i get chance at some point i'll take a picture of something similar i've done.
