One of my onions has developed a golf ball size flower. I presume this has gone to seed. Can I use this seeds next year and if so what do I need to do to remove them and store them safely?

It will be quite a while till the seed ripens. You should ideally collect from a few plants. They are ready when the seed capsules are brown and start to open or easy to crack, seed is dark and dry. They don't ripen at the same time on the same flower.

one year i planted a couple of my biggest onions to get seed from them. they duly flowered and set seed and amazingly (to me at least ) the seed started to germinate while still on the flower stalk :?
