October unexpected harvest
« on: October 23, 2010, 17:24 »
Been feeling quite impressed at the continuing productivity of my runners (albeit it at a slower rate now) given that we are closer to October than September.  Only dug out the courgettes last week after the final offerings had become sufficiently marrow-like to satisfy the MIL's bland palate.

But today as I was wandering back to the HGB hovel clutching the latest handful of green runner beauties (along with my pocketful of glasshouse green toms to go into tonights veggie casserole) I spied a couple of black flower tubs full of soil.

I realised that these were the final two of the spuds in pots this year - the tiny forgotten marble-sized bought in value potatoes of unknown variety that I found behind the veg rack well sprouted and which I gave a try anyhow in these Morrison flower tubs.  I remember that the foliage disappeared months ago and I had quite simply forgotten 'em.

Turned them out not expecting too much and found this little bunch hiding away in there!

Isn't it funny how these unexpected 'wins' seem much more satisying!

lucky you !!!

I did that this last week too. I was just throwing the used compost into a tub when a load of tatties fell out. We had them for tea that day.

I should perhaps point out that those were from two tubs, not a single one!

I scrubbed the ten or so marble-sized ones (the skins came up beautifully) and chucked them into the veg casserole we had for dinner tonight.  Absolutely gorgeous they were too.   I most definitely will be doing lots more next year!
