Thanks for that richyrich7.  How close to beans will this beer trap need to be? Is it a case of more the merrier?

You need to use slug pellets its the only sure way to get rid of them. I have never seen a bird eating a dead slug so the danger to birds is non exsistant. I dispose of all dead slugs . In the end the slugs get smaller and smaller as you kill off each generation and you will then have a few slug free years. Then as soon as you spot their damage start all over again.

I'm only new so dont necessarily listen to me but I had something nibbling on my tomatoeplants last week I had egg shells round them, I put sand down just a sprinkle all around and they haven't been touched since! apparently slugs etc cant crawl over sand ?

my allotment in holland is all sand  and the slugs do very well indeed!!!
