Patty Pan Squashes
« on: May 08, 2012, 16:18 »
For the first time I'm growing Patty Pan Squashes. I have a raised bed 8 x 4 feet (sorry not gone metric yet) allocated for them. Now I know Patty Pan can grow 2 to 3 feet high and 3 to 5 spread (info from internet search no personal experience of them) so I'm not going to be able to put many plants in the bed but can anyone tell me how many squashes a plant may produce (approximately). If there's not many it may not be worth planting them in that space and I've nowhere else to put them.

Anyone else grown them?

Mine didn't spread that much,no more than a couple of feet and most of the patty pans grew centrally as I remember.I think I got between 10 and 20 per plant .

Thanks for your replies. Thats great I have 6 plants, so they should go into the bed quite easily. I have visions of these trifids creeping everywhere and taking over the plot.

We have always had a great crop of patty pans -- grown yellow and white, as well as a green sort.

I had four plants in an eight foot long  row, and they stretched across the bed about half way, say two feet wide  (runner beans in the other half)

Mine are going in front of my peas and I have the T&M mixed seeds so not sure what colour they're going to be - so excited!  ::)

Thanks once again. I'm looking forward to seeing the results. It will be interesting to see how many I get and will have to find some recipes . I know you can roast them, I think you can boil them. This is my first year with an allotment so it exciting to have the space to grow something different.

I have never boiled them

Sliced and fried, barbecued, stuffed and baked, added to a mix of veg under a roasting chicken, but....

.... never boiled  ;)

Good -- mainly water themselves so boiling would just turn them to mush
which would be such a waste  :nowink:

They don't freeze particularly well -- think courgette and you see what I mean

You can but they will go to moosh unless you cook them in something such as a moussaka or griddle or fry them to get rid of most of the water.

You can keep them by making an antipasta. SLice, salt and fry until cooked through then bottle in sterilised jars and top with an oil and vinegar mixture. Add various herbs, spices to taste. I like smoked paprika.

or really push the boat out and use part walnut oil and some toasted walnuts ;)
