Peas Not Filling Out
« on: June 10, 2015, 18:02 »
I sowed some Green Arrow peas during the first week in April. They've grown wonderfully and are full of pods, but the pods are not filling out...even after a few good soaking rains and some cooler temps. It seems like they've been in this flat-podded state for almost two weeks now. We've had an incredibly hot spring this year, with temps in the 80s and 90s. I'm wondering if this may be the culprit?? I'm getting impatient as I could use the space for something else and so am considering just pulling them. Does excessive heat prevent pods from filling out?
Thanks in advance!

I didn't get flowers until they reached what I'm assuming is their full height, about 2-3 feet. Pods have formed, just so few are actually plumping up😯. Frustrating 😕

But could the excessive heat be the reason they are so slow to fill out?  We really only had about two weeks of normal Spring temps and peas don't like the heat. We're headed back up in the 90s later this week so I'm thinking I should just cut my losses, pull them up and plant something heat-loving.

All plants have an optimum/ideal temperature to be as successful as possible, but peas are generally pretty laid back and can handle heat, despite what some websites say. I have never lost a crop to heat, even in very extended hot weather.

In my experience it is always water and pest control that needs to be kept on top of. They have only been in the ground 10 weeks at the most? Give them time. They are worth it :)

Edited: because Im losing the ability to count in my old age.
