I like most herbaceous perennials because you can cut them to the ground each winter and they are fresh and new each spring/summer.

What sort of garden you got Freyaluck ?

ie. Is it big, small, dry, wet, flat, sloping, mainly lawn, lots of beds, etc

My faves have to be irises. I just love the subtle colourings especially the deeper blues.

We're lucky that the old lady before us had a gardener so the beds are brilliantly planted. As one colour fades, another comes through. I wish we could do it justice but we're getting to grips slowly.
Lots of wildlife flowers and shrubs. I like bright flowers followed by bright berries/currants.
Ribes, flowering currantm, is a nice one. Nice shaped shrub. Lovely shade of green with really spectacular coloour flowers and the fruits get eaten by the birds. All round winner.

I love sweetpeas and I grow them on my plot as well as in my garden. I also love gladioli, foxglove, hollyhock and delphinium although these are all quite tall flowers.  :)

When I lived in the UK I had loads of different hardy geraniums (nothing like the  normal geraniums), hellebores and euphorbias.  My front garden was full of colour all the spring, summer and autumn.  The folk who bought the house had the flower bed dug up and put in a skip and paved over my garden  The neighbour who told me was raging- she said she would have gone over and helped herself to the plants!! Folk used to stop and tell me how nice my garden was.  It didn´t take much to keep nice, just a tidy up every couple of weeks. I miss that sort of garden here :(   I used to go to the local farm shop and buy a plant a week so it didn´t cost too much and gradually filled up. All the plants came back in flower year after year too

im afraid i love proper old fashioned cottage garden plants,

sunflowers, hollyhocks, any poppy, sweetpeas,  cornflowers, roses, lupins, gladioli, snap dragons

my dream for my part of the garden, is a perfect round lawn surrounded by big deep borders full of traditional plants.

ive planted my first border this year, its cost an absolute fortune, but in a couple of years or so when its established it should look amazing.

Teazels are fun. We've given away about 50 of them this past week on freecycle and have several dozen still coming through.

The birds and bees love them. Also Foxgloves. Mulleins.
I'll try and find some photos of the garden last summer.

I like all plants really but I think shrubs with a bit of interest such as flowering or changing colour through the seasons can make your garden interesting all year around not just in spring and summer.  I like Hebes as there are many to choose from, Photinia Red Robin if you've a bigger garden, Cornus Midwinter Fire, oh ok, loads and loads of plants I like ha ha

I like all the cottage garden types of plants too especially if they self seeds.  Lots of free plants!

ohh lots of replys  :D  :D
I am looking to do my front garden. Its about 5 by 7 with a path circling it will have to take a pic, I have my herbs in the middle and a tiny pond by the house.  I just want to fill the edge with lots of colour throughout the year. It is lovely in august as hundreds of marigolds appear, but I would love to enjoy it 12 months not just 1.
Thanks for all the ideas keep them coming, my brain is now starting to tick
