A couple of years ago on a trip o Guernsey I noticed loads of REALLY tall spikes of flowers....upwards of 20ft or more. Fantastic they were with loads and loads of tightly packed blooms, ranging from pink to purple. Does anyone happen to know the name of these plants?

Does sound like Echium.
they are usually monocarpic ie die after flowering, also a bit tender, wouldn't have survived here last winter but what a sight when in full flower!!

Not at the moment Rob....all the ones we had are stored on our old 'puter (thicko here did'nt think to put them onto disc)....will take some new ones soon and put them up.
