Pieris Problem
« on: March 24, 2019, 23:03 »
Can anyone help out with my Pieris please.
I’ve looked online but still have no clue.
It is about 5ft high and in a very large pot.
The black patches are worse on the lower part of the plant, but seen to be spreading slowly.
Can it be saved!

It’s sooty mould, wash it all off with a mix of water & washing up liquid, remember the undersides of the leaves. For good measure I’d do all the leaves in case the spores have spread. It will recover, well bay tree did.😊

Yes, it should recover as the leaves will get full light again and give the plant some energy to grow with.

However, it has come from somewhere: usually this grows on the sticky secretions of aphids or other sapsuckers, so a good inspection is needed so you can get rid of them. Could be tiny scale insects lying along the veins on the underside of the leaves. What ever it is, a wipe with a cotton wool pad soaked in meths will see them off without damaging the plant

As the mould is worse lower down, it looks more likely there are bugs on the plant itself rather than something  overhanging your pot

Thank you for your comments. They are much appreciated.
I will give it a wash tomorrow and hunt for aphids!
