Can I still pick Rhubarb ?
« on: June 25, 2010, 10:01 »
I planted my new Rhubarb plant last year and fed it with compost. It is now pretty huge with big healthy leaves. I harvested a couple of stems last month which seems to have spured the plant to grow better.

Can I still pick any more ? I can't tell you which variety it is.

then i will give it a massive feed and leave till next year

after that i will be eating blackcurrant pies rasberrypies etc  :D

so yesd i would have one more harvest and leave alone if it is its first year

yep do it in the autumn whn its nice and cold

however a fellow lotty holder dug up one of his crowns 6 weeks ago split in four
and planted it on my plot for me and all the leaves died
and he said well its worth a go if we get some sun
and as you know it been baking hot

and low and be hold they have all come right will get a photo and post it
but all in all wait till the crown is dormant in winter and do it then and you should have no trouble just make sure you give it a good heap of manure etc like you did for the first one

And something I learned this year  - if the weather is on the dry side - water the rhubarb.

I didn't know this and left them to their own devices during our long dry spell down here. After (finally) noticing that growth had slowed a lot, I started watering regularly. Result - a massive restart of growth.

So, if it's dry - water water water. ::)

With Rhubarb, you can't really kill it.  My boss asked me for a cutting from mine two years ago, and (I don't know what he was thinking ) but he sprayed it with weed-killer in the following winter, and it still came up :D
