Grow Your Own / Re: Onions from seed?
« Last post by Aidy on Today at 11:40 »
I have grown mine from seed for the last 8 years or more.
I find the quality is far better than a set.

Start mine by chitting the seed in damp paper then sow in 12cm root trainer's before planting out.
Mine are due for final planting in the next couple of weeks.

Grow Your Own / Re: Herbs dying help!
« Last post by dougens on Today at 11:25 »
Thanks all.
Only one (oregano) still has green when trimmed back.
I’m making another raised bed this year so will dog this herb bed out and use soil in that, then remake the soil mix for the herb bed with more drainage.

Any advice on a good mix for herb bed?

I was going to do compost, coco, perlite, sharp salt mix!

Should I add some gravel?

Thanks for help. Great site.

Grey, wet,wet,wet & cold.
A day to hide indoors I’m afraid.
It started off like that here, but it's a bit brighter now. Fingers crossed it stays that way...but looking at the weather map  ::)
6C overnight in the greenhouse, so thinking about putting everything that's in the bay window, back into the greenhouse

The Hen House / Low PUFA poultry feed...
« Last post by spud on Today at 08:24 »
Ive been working on finding low PUFA feed for my hens and its very difficult, i discovered in my research that feeding soya, maize based feeds raises the Linoleic acid content of the eggs and also the meat should you be eating any birds.

Linoleic acid is a polyunsaturated, omega-6 fatty acid, consuming it has raised concerns on peoples health issues.  Im finding that it has become a very popular food ingredient in all animal feeds and also directly fed to ourselves in most processed foods.

As i have been unable to buy a manufactured poultry feed, Ive been mixing up my own ration, not perfect and it will certainly be altered some more, but for now at least I've been able to lower the PUFA been fed to my hens.

I Will try and upload a pic of the feed later this morning for those interested.

Grow Your Own / Re: No dig potatoes using grass clippings
« Last post by Snow on Yesterday at 22:35 »
I do "no dig" potatoes, but I do put them in a hole a few inches down.i earth them up with lawn clippings, straw and comfrey. Only first earlies which need little earthing up, I don't think I could do it that way with maincrops at all, they require far too much earthing up and I don't have any spare compost when I would need it for them.
