yes you can, but sometimes it's too cold to plant then

There's some advice here http://www.nvsuk.org.uk/medwyn-williams-vegetable-grow-show-70.html

I always plant mine in a mild spell in January in a bed Ive prepared now.....
plus I plant a few spares in deep trays and put in the cold frame, these replace any duds that become apparent in February/March.....

I start my shallot seeds indoors around Christmas but don't plant them out until the weather is good for them. Indoor warmth keeps them growing until then. I pull them somewhere around late July, about a month past the longest day.

Going to try seed this year for a change, 3-4 seeds per cell, does anyone else grow from seed?

You can start shallot seeds at 3-4/cell but later you'll need to space them to one per cell if you expect them to grow and split.

It seems that a lot of the shallot seeds I've seen in the uk, are for banana or non multiplying shallots   :(  has anyone seen seed for the ordinary ones
