I planted a Bramley and an eating apple variety (the name of which eludes me at the moment) about 3 years ago.  They are growing well and are now about 8-9 feet tall.

Should I prune this year?

We planted maiden whips 7 years ago and pruned every year to get the shape we wanted.

I think it is normal practice to prune every year.

Pruning helps shape the tree and boost fruit bud production too.

Just be careful that you know whether your apples are spur bearing or tip bearing, before you cut off long shoots. (Bramleys are largely tip bearing)
