Title: Lavender
Post by: RJR_38 on April 24, 2014, 06:32
I had a packet of lavender seeds in a job lot of seeds I bought (I thought they were all veg) and I have visions of a boundary fence of lavender so I sowed half the packet. I know have around 24 plants in modules. They are around 2 inches high with quite a few leaves on one stem still. They are in my unheated blowaway greenhouse but seem very happy. What should the next stage be? Do I need to pot them on and when? When should I look at putting them outside? I'm not normally a flower grower....

Normally they would be potted up and allowed to grow for about 6 months before going out. I usually take cuttings so I could be wrong but sure I read that in the past. (It usually pops up on Pintrest!)

Yes, pot them on and leave them to grow till they're a fair size before planting out.

When they're about 5 ins tall you can give them a trim to make them grow bushy  :)
Plant out when there are no more frosts, and they're big enough.

Good advice MOS about trimming them so they don't get leggy!

I've got a lavender hedge which I grew from seed, and I'm doing another lot from seed now for another hedge.

I found that the first lot looked quite leggy if allowed to grow too high on a single stem, although they did bush out when growing bigger.

The second lot are now about 1.5" high and I've pinched out the tops already (they had a couple of pairs of true leaves each).

They are in modules (9 per half seed tray) and won't get potted up for a bit.

Thanks for this. I have never pinched out the tops of anything - I assume I just 'get rid' of the growing tip at the top? I will do this at the weeken when I have a bit more time then. I will leave them in their modules for a bit longer and then look at potting up into small pots in a month or so. Thanks!

Yes, just take out the leading tip.
